Marital Arts for Think Quest

2009
Our website is about martial arts. We will try to give information that will help the reader know a little bit more about the history about some martial arts. And basically give information that if the reader wanted to join a martial art, knows a little of the history so he/she would find useful in choosing a martial art.

Team Collaboration

We all used our strengths to accomplish this project. Tim researched Karate and images to use on the website. Riana found some images and most of the fun stuff. I worked on the page layout, links and references. Riana studied Taekwondo and Tim studied Karate. On top of their research, I studied Judo, Ninjutsu, Aikido, and Kung Fu. Through my research I was able to add to and enhance Tim and Riana’s research.

We did have a few disagreements; mainly it was about how we needed more information and research to complete our project. Our disagreements ended when our coach was called in to settle our problems. I think we all pulled together in the end. And now we have a cool site! We all tried to use our strengths well and to overcome our differences and weaknesses. I ended up as leader because I had the most computer experience and I enjoy working with new and exciting tools.

Our strengths and weaknesses really came out during this project. Riana used her skill for having fun; she looked up some of the images and also drew some pictures for the site. She completed her “About Me” page. Since Tim is studying Karate outside of school, he was excited to study and learn more about that particular martial art. He also completed his “About Me” page. He still needs to add images to enhance it. They could have stayed on task and focused more on the project. School and this project were important to me. I was so dedicated that I stayed after school to work on it, used free periods to do more research and worked during February vacation to gather more information that we needed. I was dedicated to this project. My flaw was how my team said I was bossy. I do get competitive when I want to do my very best. We all collaborated with the information and work we had and little by little the project came together.

I hope we can continue our research and enhance our website in the future.

Team Diversity

Our diversity though minimal, enhanced our website in many ways. Our team has diverse learning styles. I personally learn in a more hands on sort of way. For example, we did a science experiment that was teaching us about peristalsis and we had to squeeze a tennis ball through a clear plastic tube. You couldn’t go too fast, or too slow. Tim and Riana’s learning styles are through repetition. For example flash cards.

We all have different strengths and weaknesses that applied to our teamwork. My strengths are simply I’m good at computers, and I can stay focused for a long time if I’m by myself, I also am a natural leader and I strive for doing my best at everything, it’s sort of my secret obsession. I have one major draw back though, my team says I can get bossy. As I said earlier in this paragraph, I want to be the best. And since this will be graded, a good grade will help me earn my way into a good college. Tim’s strength is he is able to do a lot of work for short periods of time. He can work hastily for ten minutes, then work slowly for five minutes. During those 5 minutes; he tends to be a distraction to other people around him. Riana likes to have fun and contributed humor to the team. She looked up information, and she contributed some images to the project. Her only problem is she doesn’t really focus very well. She needs reminders to keep working. A common strength we have is we all are interested in learning the martial arts and we have studied through our dojo a form of Karate called Kosho Shorei Ryu Kempo Karate.

We all come from very similar socioeconomic backgrounds, mainly middle class working families. As for cultures, we are all Americans from small town New Hampshire. Being from a small town, there is not very much cultural diversity that we could draw upon.
