Why are Hawaii's Wetlands Vanishing?

2001
It is a fact that Hawaii has been estimated to have less than 10% of their wetlands remaining today! Unfortunately, one of the wetland that has vanished over a period of 300 years, is one that is located right in our community, Kaelepulu Pond. Kaelepulu Pond was once a thriving wetland filled with native wildlife. It was also known as one of the few natural freshwater fishpond in the state of Hawaii. All of this has vanished and what is left is a polluted pond which is now called Enchanted Lake. ?Why are Hawaii?s Wetlands Vanishing?? is an interactive website filled with dynamic graphics, animations, sounds, video clips, and a learning center of interactive activities. It takes the viewers on a journey back to the past when the wetland was a thriving marshland and then completes its journey to present day. You will virtually see the changes that affected the habitat and wildlife of Kaelepulu Pond.

Aloha Paradise?

1999
Our "Aloha Paradise? Network" is a web site about the endangered and extinct plants and animals of Hawaii, the most endangered species spot on Earth! The site shows others about endangered species and what is happening to our islands' beauty. Our Web site is organized somewhat like a television network with different shows such as the "Extinct Files," "Mynah Winery," "Rescue 5-0," "Hawaii's Most Wanted," "Earthline," and "Animal Squares." Hopefully, we can encourage and move other people to become active in trying to prevent any more species from becoming endangered or extinct, by approaching the issue in an entertaining yet informative way. We would like to decrease the amount of plants and animals that are disappearing before it's too late. Join us in our mission to save our Hawaiian Paradise.

Hawaiian Style

2001
Our entry is about the Ancient/Native Hawaiians, their culture, their accomplishments, and ultimately a whole different world many people didn't know existed. Some people think Hawaii is a place with grass as our clothes and no carsor no buildings. But that's very wrong!! Hawaii has high technology, cars (limos), sky scrapers and even a air port. Hawaii is modernize, but we're trying to teach others that Hawaiians worked hard to accomplish what they have. They navigated on their own, they made their own way of government, and they used the land for many different purposes.

Sugar Roots

2000
The sugar industry was once the major economic source of Hawaii. Immigrants from the various Asian Pacific countries were brought to the islands on labor contracts to work the sugar fields. We are a land of multi-ethnic groups who have created a culture with the sugar plantations as the driving force. Our ancestors to the new lands to bring us hope and opportunity. We believe the sugar companies would continue to be a part of our economic future. Unfortunately that was not to be. This website is a commemoration to our ancestors, to let them know that their "sugar legacy" will continue to be a learning tool for us, the fifth generation and for future generations. That no matter where we come from, we take pride in our own heritage while embracing our fellow immigrants cultural differences. The sugar plantation created a "Plantation Family" providing jobs, homes, churches, and medical care. It also created something more, it created a sense of community, belonging and identity to displaced immigrants. With the creation of this site, we hope to continue the traditions that provided many of us with the knowledge of who we are, where we come from and how we got to where we are now. Knowledge that if lost, will be lost for all eternity. "It is said that when an ancestor passes on, a library closes." Anonymous

Journey to Mauna Kea

1999
Mauna Kea, the white capped mountain! Many visitors come to our state to see this landmark. Many countries have built telescopes on the top of this beautiful mountain. Why? What is the appeal of this landmark? Our site presents what four students learned about Mauna Kea. Using technology tools to enhance their learning, the students search the web for information and evaluated what was relevant for their reports. They then constructed web pages to share their findings with others. The students wanted to let other people know what some of the physical aspects of Mauna Kea are, what plants and animals live there, what kind of observatories are located there and why there are so many observatories at the summit. They also wanted to inform others that yes, there is snow in Hawaii! A person can go skiing, snowboarding and even boogie boarding on top of Mauna Kea.
