Styles on the 50

2002
This site was designed to educate and inform all people of the importance of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's) and Black College Bands. We all know there is nothing like going to a black college football game and viewing a spectacular half-time show that is being performed by a black college band. Some people only look at the dancing movements, but we want to let everyone know that dancing is not what black college bands are all about. It is not easy to march with a black college band; therefore, individuals within these black college bands work very hard. It takes time, hard work, and a lot of dedication. Everyone needs to know that these black college bands can not only "get down", but they can also play. So, as you explore "Styles on the 50", try not to get too excited by what you see, but try to inform and educate yourself with the information we have provided for you.

The goal of our website was to teach students about other cultures and different lifestyles. In order to do that, we had to come up with a topic. We came up with the Amish, because they seem so interesting because of their way of life. We also had to come up with educational and fun ideas. We went to libraries to get books for information, and we put our heads together for creative ideas. We had to learn a lot about certain computer programs. The one thing that was most interesting and educational that we learned about was how the Amish have started to use technology. Everything we learned in school never mentioned anything about technology. We hope you enjoy our website!

Borderless World: Geography and the Internet

1999
Borderless World is a fun, interactive, informative site about all aspects of geography--the study of mankind's interaction with the Earth. Our main focus and intent, however, is to explore the globalization of the world's cultures, economies, languages, ideas, and heritages caused by the advent of the Internet. We provide a dynamic medium with user-controlled content in which students of different countries, cultures, and languages are encouraged to contribute their own thoughts and information. By doing this, we hope to bring together students from all countries of the world in one common effort--to analyz ourselves through geography, each of us learning about different countries and their effects on the lives of the peoples within. In doing so, each of us will discover how--because of our world and our place in it--each of us is unique. Yet, perhaps more importantly, we will also discover in our interactions with one another how very much we all have in common.

Kids of the 90's

1999
Kids of the 90's was created by the use of survey. Students from 4th, 5th, and 6th grade were surveyed to find out how they spend their time after school, the sports they may be involved in, the influence TV may have upon them, and what their favorites are. This was done to form a base line. It is our hope, that we will find out about other students/kids outside our community, other than what we see on the television sitcoms. We hope to find out what the typical student that is participating in ThinkQuest Junior, is like. Once we complied and graphed the St.Croix Falls information, we researched the "winning" results and put that information on our pages. We created surveys for input from students outside of SCF. We also hope to have students pick a topic, research it, and submit it to us. If accepted we will add it to our page. We want kids to interact with our questions and conclusions. We may find that the "rest of the world" is like us. We may find that kids are not like they are portrayed on television. We do know that often times kids have favorites and don't really have any information to base their thinking upon. We hope that students will learn knew and interesting things about themselves and others!

The Asian Ear

1999
Asian ethnic music has long been a topic of interest to many westerners that want to find out more about these intriguing and fascinating instruments and music, many of which have diverse historical backgrounds, "foreign" design, and different sound qualities. In this project entitled "The Asian Ear", we will be investigating these fascinating instruments of Asian ethnic origin. First and most importantly we will feature the instruments themselves, the basis of all Asian music and the source of our inspiration. This section will explain the history, development, and origin of the instruments, famous people who may be associated with these instruments, their acoustics and sound qualities, the ensemble they belong to and their use in modern times. This section will also include sound clips, video clips, and pictures of the instruments so users can fully experience the music of the Asian culture. Secondly, we will also feature a section that showcases the various ensembles of Asian ethnic music, and how certain instruments combine their acoustic qualities within an ensemble. Finally, we will include an interactive portion of our site where users can read through other user's experiences with Asian music, as well as listen to and actually create samples of the Asian style music. Our site will enable the people of the world to discover the wonderful and colorful world of Asian ethnic instruments and music.

The French Connection

1999
This web site has been designed to help students in the French American Exchange Program plan and prepare for their trip to France. The web site will serve to be a way for our French friends to learn about our community and culture and to communicate with us electronically. It also was made to teach all students about the French culture. We have gathered together many internet web resources in our site, as well as personal photos and communications between ourselves and our French friends. We, as authors, have been involved in French classes throughout the semester. We, with the exception of Corey, will be among the travelers to France in June, 1999. We also have designed a memory book to include pictures of past exchanges and a place to add our future photos. There will be another school from Downers Grove, Illinois who will be traveling to Aubevoye in June as well. We hope that they too will benefit from this peek into the French culture.

Alaska from a Kid's Point of View

1998
The objective of this entry is to help kids all over the country and the world who are studying about Alaska in Social Studies. We want to let them know what it is really like to be a kid in Alaska. They can find lots of facts about Alaska in other places, but we couldn't find any other source that could help kids know what it is like to really live here. We want to inform kids about our lifestyles and hobbies because even though we live very different than most kids, we are the same in a lot of ways. If kids are doing reports, this is a fun place they can look up information they probably can't find anyplace else. It might help kids understand how exciting it is to live in Alaska if they can read about our adventures. We want to tell kids about things they didn't even know existed so they will want to come to Alaska someday and see for themselves.
