Your Brain is the centerpiece of your existence. Functionally, it can be split into two distinct categories that complement each other in all activities of your day. The Brain that powers you, that mesh of flesh is one of the most complex organs in your body, and also one of the most responsive. It is a thing that can be weighed, measured, looked at, and studied. On the surface, most human brains look pretty much the same: light-pink-and-grayish-white, wrinkled, and squishy. Alternatively, your mind is open and free. It is a window into all that is thought, and uses the physical attributes of your brain to function. You can't pick up a mind, toss it into a jar, and label it. Humans are conscious beings. We share a common experience of a sense of self, of conscious awareness - a trait some believe is uniquely human - yet the quest to explain consciousness is one of the last remaining great adventures of science, philosophy, and religion. Here on The Brain Explorer, as humans, we explore the Brain, the Mind, physical & psychological, in an interactive method using a wide range of resources. And of course, as a human yourself, you're fully entitled to explore with others, even those who are over 13,500 miles away. Just be sure to check out the Interactive section of the site, because with over 20 activities you can participate in with other brain-holders, your brain will never get dull.

People have always wondered what matter is made up of. Some believed there are four elements - earth, water, air, fire which make up matter. Some believed there are five elements - gold, earth, water, fire, wood. These conceptions were extremely wild until in approximately 430 BC, a Greek named Democritus suggested that matter was made up of invisible, indivisible particles called atoms, which came from the Greek word, 'atomos', meaning 'indivisible'. However, he stated that atoms couldn't be split into even smaller particles, which was very wrong. This theory was taken lightly until about the early 1800s. This website will lead you to understanding more about the indivisible!

The project "Etiquette" is the reflection of our conception of etiquette as a social science. We believe there are misunderstandings about what etiquette is about. We think people have the misconception that etiquette is about rules to make their lives more difficult and limit their actions. We believe the true aim of etiquette is to help all people of all lifestyles get along with each other. Etiquette is a wide and complex topic. We begin our project by giving users interesting facts from the History of Etiquette to get a general idea of the topic. In our opinion, Table Etiquette (table manners, table arrangement, how to eat meals with others) is one of the most important and contemporary issues of etiquette. Our conception of etiquette is a wide ranging one. We also regard etiquette as a special social language and have included a section on Body Language and a new science called kinesics. The rebus, tests, amusing artworks and photos, the design and a sense of humor give a lighthearted attitude to a subject that often becomes heavyhanded. The information is presented in condensed form and the interesting facts will enrich your knowledge.

The page has a great educational value because all these mathematicians (around 60) are the ones whose formulas and theorems are studied during High School. Also the page has a few basics mathematical problems that increase the website’s interactivity.
A large image library, different internal and external search engines, supplementary settings, screen savers for download (built by us) and other tools, a dynamic and professional graphical interface makes from this site a complex and original entry.

NASA’s most recent venture into space will involve the study of one of the most fascinating, yet mysterious features of the solar system—-the sun. Ironically, mankind has lived for millennia under the sun’s vigilance, yet we still remain oblivious to most of its undiscovered sciences. You’d think that after thousands of years of scientific observation, we would have unveiled more information about this age-old star than we have, but two tiny details have complicated our efforts--the sun is too bright and hot to study directly, and too far away to study closely. So how is NASA going to examine the sun if their equipment can’t get past the intensity of heat and light? The answer lies in an old form of technology, exploited for the purposes of modern science. Invented more than 450 years ago, Galileo’s telescope has inspired NASA’s HESSI telescope, which will scope the sun’s solar flares to collect data about their particle acceleration and energy release. Our goal in developing this informative website is to help students better understand the purpose of the HESSI telescope. We also wish to provide teachers with resources appropriate for their classroom lesson plans.

Stray voltage is an environmental pollutant that causes harmful effects in animals. I became interested in this subject after reading a research paper written by Dr. Christine Ratke. There is an absence of rodents in food storage areas on affected properties. Also, no mosquitoes or frogs are present in the ponds and marshes on these farms. I chose an invertebrate animals, the planaria, as my research test subject because the are native pond-dwellers with sensitive nervous systems which simplify conditioning. My dad helped me to design an apparatus to simulate stray voltage conditions. Our hypothesis was that stray voltage has an adverse effect on the conditioning rate and regeneration of planaria. Most exposure an animal may have to electricity in its environment is alternating current with a frequency of 60 cycles per second (HZ), so I used a generator set at 60 cycles/sec. An animal may also be exposed to a frequency that is higher than 60 Hz, or current that is less than 1/2 of a 60 Hz cycle (transicent currents). I set up a continuous current of 3V at 1 milliampere. To simulate stray volutate I used transient currents produced by a 5V spike. A pulse of 5V at 0.017 seconds was miaintained. Planaria were placed under three conditions, ambient control, constant current and constant current with spikes, for 28 days and conditioned and tested for learning ability on days 1,3,7, 14, 21 and 28. The evaluation of research results was grouped according to perception, behavior changes and production lsses.

The average human brain weighs about 3 pounds-only about two percent of our body weight. This three-pound structure uses 20 percent of the blood pumped by the heart and 15-20 percent of the body's oxygen. Within this remarkable structure, the brain, there are approximately 100 billion neurons. Each neuron has 1,000 to 10,000 synapses or connections. The capacity of these neurons gives the brain a capacity to remember, think and create superior to that of any computer built by man. In addition to the nearly infinite possible connections and interactions, the brain has different wavelengths that denote different states or ways the brain can be used. These wavelengths are Alpha, Beta, Theta and Delta. The brain's six cortical layers cover two hemispheres (or sides). These hemispheres cover the limbic system (or emotional brain) and the ancient, reptilian brain stem. Both of these hemispheres have specialized functions to, some extent, to give different intelligences and abilities. The left brain controls logic and language, but also mixes with the right brain for creativity in things such as poetry. The right brain is sometimes called the artistic brain. It specializes in visual arts, music and other artistic functions as well as collaborations with the left brain. These two hemispheres are connected by the Corpus Callosum, which contains 250 fibers that help us orchestrate the symphony of critcal thinking, creating and caring. This plant is regarded as a gift of the gods by some people while to others it is regarded as one of the worst aquatic alien invaders that must be eradicated at all costs. It has spread throughout the world crippling the rivers and lakes in many countries. Africa is particularly badly affected. Many people are unaware that the massive growth of water hyacinth is a direct result of man - we pollute the rivers and water hyacinth thrives on the nitrate rich waters. All around people are beginning to use this plant as a resource for self help schemes. It is a valuable plant that is being used to purify polluted water. Our attitude to this noxious weed has changed since we started this project. We believe that one has to look at the cause of the problem which is pollution. When the nations in Africa and the world work together to sort this out, only then will water hyacinth be brought under control. We have come to believe that the symptom which is the water hyacinth should be utilised effectively.

We are a group of 3 students from the southern most tip of Africa. Our goal is to give students an interactive training session on Radioactivity, its origin, and its uses. After a search on the world wide web, we have found that there are very few sites explaining what radioactivity really is... from the very beginning. We solved that by creating our site, Radioactivity : a new dimension. This exercise served not only the learners of today, but also guided us in our quest to enrich our own knowledge in the field of science and all its wonders.

This is a work in progress, although it does contain the full text of all 10 of Shakespeare's tragedies. The resources for Hamlet and MacBeth are particularly nice, and show what could be done with the other plays. Includes play summaries, character descriptions, classroom guides, and helps for staging. There are some glitches but what's there works well. It's a useful Shakespeare study aid.
Languages:English.
