On April 26, 1937, during the Spanish Civil War, the Basque town of Guernica was bombed by the German squadron known as the Condor Legion, under the command of Francisco Franco. The Condor Legion was assigned aerial missions throughout Spain, as Nazi Germany's prime contribution to Franco's forces. As a result, there were approximately 10,000 deaths, most of which were elderly people, women, and children. The bombardment of Guernica became a world-renowned symbol of the horrors of war. It inspired Pablo Picasso's most anti- war work of art, called Guernica. In this painting, Picasso captured the anguish and despair resulting from the violence and dementia of Franco and his actions.

For countless centuries, people have ventured forth into areas they have known little about. The desire to explore has been prompted by many different reasons- from necessity and curiosity to the desire to find riches. "Voyages of Exploration: Discovering New Horizons" follows in the footsteps of some of the world's greatest explorers, reliving their adventurous expeditions into the unknown. Our aim is to take the users on a journey through past centuries looking at these adventurers, the dangers they faced, where they went and their motivation for exploration. This fits into the curriculum of many areas in many countries, where for example, students may be required to explain the political and economic motives for European exploration, trace the routes of the major Spanish and Portuguese explorers and map the empires established or chart the sea journeys of explorers to Australia. "Voyages of Exploration" is no ordinary text book though. This site utilizes the latest Internet technologies to promote Internet learning by allowing students to interact with fellow students around the world and allows teacher's to track their student's progress.

What do you expect from a successful military leader? He always obeys orders until he is able to conduct a war himself. That was completely different with Admiral Sir Horacio Nelson: from the beginning of his military career the man who rose from the ranks and was to become Britain''s most popular war hero chose to think on his own and to perform naval operations according to his own ideas, thus gaining success and glory for himself and his country through military disobedience. This is the issue that goes through Nelson''s life and work, and this entry examines Nelson''s life through this angle. Indeed, military tactics of his time had become old-fashioned and made obsolete by the development of modern weapons as well as ships, and he was the first one to realize and appreciate the changes. Being successful, he escaped punishments. He conquered the oceans for his country, and thus England was able to construct its empire. On the web-site "Admiral Nelson - Hero @ Sea" you can find all the relevant information about Nelson himself, but also about the Great War between England and France from 1793 to 1815 and the historical development of Great Britain''s Empire. You can see why and how Nelson completely changed the course of European history. The site also contains a glossary of some Naval words, and explains ranks and ships of the Royal Navy from the 18th century. If you want to find Napoleon`s real opponent you will find him inside this site!

This site has two subject areas: The first is the famous story of the Titanic. The second is that of its connection to our locality - Athlone, Ireland. The Titanic is an important piece of history for many reasons. There are the elements of human tradgedy and the implications the disaster would have for all passenger shipping in the future. But the Titanic was also an important symbol of the industrial revolution. For Ireland the ship evokes many feelings as the majority of those travelling were leaving behind a county where famine was still a recent memory. For all these reasons the Titanic is now a large part of the history syllabus in Irish National schools. This site is a useful study aid for those researching the topic. However it is also a record of those people who history will never individually record.

Georgia is a small mountainous country situated to the south of the Caucasus Mountains on the cross-road between the East and the West, the South and the North. It is a young country that appeared on the World map less than ten years ago and at the same time one of the oldest countries with history starting in the ancient times. Many ancient people have disappeared since that. How could a little nation, constantly invaded by powerful neighbours and visitors, such as Greeks, Romans, Bysantines, Iranians, Arabs, Mongols, Turks, Russians, escape degeneration? What was the power that helped us to survive?
We'll try to tell you in brief the most important events from our history, describe you the life of our people, the soul of the nation. We hope you will not be bored and even more - we hope you'll get pleasure to meet brave and hospital pople, open hearted, hard working and gay. You can compare our habitudes and outlook on life with that of other nations', put yourself in place of our heroes. Maybe at the end of our trip you feel that the tolerance to other people's views, the skill to find compromise even with the enemy, a deep devotion to own homeland and faith, readiness to fight till death for the freedom helped us to overpass the most difficult periods of our history. Once more you will learn to love your own Motherland as well as all the other peoples living on our beautiful Earth.

The entry is chiefly about Sarajevo and a comparison of three eras in its existence. The first is the period of highest prosperity in which Sarajevo hosted the XIV Winter Olympic Games in 1984. The second period in which the city was under siege during the horrific war from 1992-95 that reached the highest point in 1994. The third is the period is the post-war period during which this page was made. It looks at the reconstruction of a devastated city in all its aspects; from buildings to post-war psychology.
Metaphorically the name of the entry "Phoenix of Sarajevo" is directed at the people who fought for the city to the end. The entry is aimed to present to the world this enigmatic city that the Black & Yellow empire called in 1878 Terra nova. It also show how a nation can fall from the highest regards to the deepest catacombs in just a few years and how it rebuilds itself internally. It's not just a point of view on a historical situation; it's a warning and an appeal to the world for world peace and collaboration.

Bulgaria is a small country in Europe and many people havent even heard its name. There is an old saying in here: When God created the Earth and gave all goods of nature to different countries, some took the beautiful mountains, some took the generous lands, and others the azure coasts and seas. And when finally it was Bulgarias turn everything had already been given and there was nothing left. So God took a piece of wonderful nature from every other country and gave it to Bulgaria.
Bulgaria was founded in 681 and the project will lead the user through time and space as it describes Bulgarias geography, places of interest and the most important moments of our history. There are many heroes in this history, many battles, many victories and many tragedies; lost illusions and never dying hopes. And today we, young Bulgarians, try to build a new democratic society without losing our more than 13-century old identity and culture. In a way everyone could learn something more about human nature and our world and how we can all make it better tomorrow.
We will use extensively photos, drawings and multimedia. Also there will be special features and links to cultural and historical resources.
We hope this project will benefit everyone. New people may learn about our country and our deep soul, talent and cordiality thus enriching their own experience and promoting this miraculous beauty of the world.
